Margaret Ingels’s Willis Haviland Carrier: Father of Air Conditioning records the life of the engineer associated with modern air conditioning. The original edition was published by Country Life Press in 1952, as recorded in the University of Southern Indiana library catalog.
The Library of Congress reading guide lists a later, 1972 edition and highlights the book’s chronology of developments leading to modern air conditioning. This page offers a brief historical introduction, rather than the full book.
The engineer behind the name
Born in New York in 1876, Carrier studied engineering at Cornell University before joining the Buffalo Forge Company. His early air-conditioning work addressed a practical industrial problem: controlling conditions inside a Brooklyn printing plant.
In 1902, his system for Sackett & Wilhelms helped establish the path toward modern air conditioning. Carrier’s official history website describes that design as the beginning of an industry built around control of the indoor environment.

From industrial air control to home comfort
Carrier’s story connects the practical needs of factories with the comfort people now expect indoors. For homeowners, that history is a reminder that air conditioning involves more than a cold breeze: the indoor environment matters, too.
